Data recovery. All is not lost

Posted on by Robert Collar

Have you deleted vital files or data off your hard drive that you urgently need to get back? Then you’ve come to the right place. At TAB Computers, our track record of recovering missing and deleted files for our customers is second to none.

When a file is deleted, it is not actually removed from the hard drive but instead an index called the Master File Table is updated with a special character denoting that the space the file used to occupy is now available to be written to.

Provided that no new files have actually been written to this space, the chances of recovery are very high using specialist software to look for the special characters that denote the former existence of files.

There is both commercial and free software available that will do the job of analysing a drive, looking for files that no longer show up in the Master File Table and are therefore not visible or searchable – but are actually still there.

Sometimes the freely available software is enough to recover the missing files, particularly if used immediately after deletion and before any other data has had the chance to be written to the space that the file formerly occupied.

The problem with this approach is that by installing the software to a drive that needs to be scanned for missing files, there is a good chance that you will overwrite the very file that you are trying to recover with the software that you are using to recover it !

A better approach is to use software that does not require installation, but can be run from a memory stick or CD, therefore not potentially destroying the data you are trying to recover. At TAB Computers our staff have been able to recover many thousands of precious files over the past decade for our customers, ranging from individuals who have lost irreplaceable photos, to businesses who have lost irreplaceable spread sheets and financial information.

If you have lost vital files and tried all the conventional ways of getting them back, such as recycle bin, volume shadow copy, restore from backups (you did do daily backups right?) then give us a call or fill in the contact form and we will call you back. You’ve got nothing to lose. If we can’t recover your files then we don’t charge and if we can get your data back, our costs are very reasonable and almost certainly much less than you were expecting.
